The Hours Begin to Sing (2013)

To be part of the creative process of new songs from their inception to fruition is an exhilarating – and altogether humbling – experience. Myriad externalities influence the direction of the journey from the moment the text speaks to a composer until the moment the performers speak the text; but the great wonder is in what happens in between, in the mind and hand of the composer. As a mother, I can only liken this miracle to birth: an essential force comes into the world fully formed, through the conduit of another human being. And once it arrives, you cannot conceive of it never having been. I am grateful to have been some small part of such miracles.

David Krakauer

Internationally acclaimed clarinetist David Krakauer redefines the notion of a concert artist. One of the world’s leading exponents of Eastern European Jewish klezmer music, he is also a major voice in classical music. He has appeared with the Tokyo, Kronos, and Emerson quartets, plus as soloist with the Dresden, Seattle, and Detroit symphony orchestras, among others. With his band Ancestral Groove, he has redefined the klezmer genre with major appearances at Carnegie Hall and internationally. His discography contains some of the most important klezmer recordings of the past decade, notably The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind (Golijov/Kronos/Krakauer on Nonesuch). Consistently defying categorization, Krakauer has enjoyed artistic collaborations with Dawn Upshaw, Itzhak Perlman, John Zorn, Fred Wesley, Music from Marlboro, Abraham Inc, the Klezmatics, John Cage, Danny Elfman, and Socalled. His newest project, The Big Picture, explores the universal search for identity through reimaginations of familiar film themes brought together in a cinematic concert accompanied by original visuals. davidkrakauer.com

Garner

The body of work by David Garner reflects his decades of musical training, historical knowledge, theatrical flair and humour. For over 25 years now, the San Francisco composer has been creating uniquely beautiful works, and interest in his music continues to build. Recent career highlights include the première of his Five Chokas for the Princess at the SF Asian Art Museum; the première of his guitar composition Raghs at the Ordu International Guitar Festival in Turkey; the première and CD release of Cuadro cuadrangulos by QUADRE; the Costa Rica performance of Seis caprichos de García Lorca (as part of the Ibero-American Institute’s “Federico García Lorca Project”) with tenor Manuel Marin; the New York première of Phenomenal Woman, performed by Frederica von Stade, Lisa Delan, Zhang Cao and Kristin Pankonin; and an additional New York performance of Phenomenal Woman at the Salander- O’Reilly Gallery.

    Audaud.com

Lisa Delan is still the master of this sort of recital, even more affecting and in control than the last album. I for one will be thrilled if there is yet another and I can’t think of any reason why there won’t be. PENTATONE again proves that intimate chamber music can be well-served by judicious use of the surround-sound microphones. Outstanding!
